Marooned on Hog Island


From 21st Amendment Brewery, Marooned on Hog Island is an oyster stout brewed with Hog Island Sweetwater oyster shells. The thick sticky head hangs around for awhile, and the nose has coffee and light caramel and chocolate notes. The middle is balanced between sweet and salty with milk and chocolate and the salty ocean notes of the oyster shells. Then finish moves back towards the sweet with more chocolate and a bit of caramel returning. A lovely stout with a oceanic touch. The body is medium and the alcohol is a strong-ish 7.9% ABV.

I give it a 4.6 out of 5.

Lower De Boom


A barleywine style ale from California’s 21st Amendment Brewery, Lower De Boom is a big beer in a small can. A Red BullĀ® sized 8.4oz can to be exact. I can’t say for sure, but I speculate that the smaller can size is in consideration of this brew’s equally massive alcohol level of 11.5% ABV. The overall character of this beer is big, heavy, and boozy. The nose has licorice and fruitcake, and alcohol. The middle has toffee, a lot of citrus, both orange and lemon, and a ton of alcohol. The finish is sweet and it has a bit of toast, raisins, more licorice and a bit of heat right at the end from, you probably guessed it, the alcohol. This is a beer that you want to use as a digestif, and sip it slowly. When you do that, you get the chance to savor all of the rich and varied flavors, and enjoy a particularly excellent beer.

21st Amendment Sneak Attack



So I lied. Or was at least mistaken. I said last week that my review of Samuel Smith’s Winter Welcome Ale was going to be the last winter seasonal review of the year, but now I’ve found a can of 21st Amendment Brewery’s winter seasonal, Sneak Attack hiding in my fridge. I guess that’s exactly what I should expect of a beer named Sneak Attack. Sneak Attack is a Saison, which is a really nice style to welcome in the spring, so it’s probably fortuitous that it gets to be my actual last winter seasonal review of the year. As you can see from the picture it pours with a massive head of light meringue-like white foam that sticks around for a bit, but will disappear after a few minutes. The nose is scented with herbs, grass, and yeast. The middle is tart, with herbs again, as well as lemon. The finish is dry and woody with a bit of lemon zest. The body is medium weight, and the alcohol is a reasonable 6.2% ABV. At any time of year this is a nice solid Saison.
