“Inspired by the flavors of Southeast Asian cuisine” is what South Carolina’s Westbrook Brewing Co. says about White Thai, a wheat based ale with lemongrass and ginger instead of the traditional witbier’s coriander and orange peel. It’s a mild drinking ale, as appropriate for a wheat ale, with lemongrass and a bit of yeast in the nose, some orange and ginger in the middle, and a hint of pepper in the finish. There’s a slight buttery undertone, but overall the character is relatively light and summery. The body is medium, and the alcohol is a reasonably low 5% ABV.

I give it a 3.5 out of 5.

NoDa Nodajito

This summer refresher from NoDa Brewing Company here in Charlotte is a mojito inspired twist on a Belgain Witbier. It pours the expected light golden hue with the traditional massive wheat head. The nose is spicy and clean, with some light wheat flour notes. The middle is where the mojiton influence comes to the fore, with the light wheat base entirely masked by strong mint and lime flavors. The lime lingers into the finish, along with wheat toast and a bit of Belgian sourness. The body is light to medium and the alcohol is a lovely summmer-ey 4.8% ABV. This is a fun beer and could hold its own against beer-based beverages like a Shandy or Radler. A nice summer treat.

I give it a 3.9 out of 5.

Southbound Scattered Sun

Scattered Sun is a Belgian-style Witbier from Southbound Brewing Co. of Savannah, Georgia. The head is foamy and voluminous, dissipating fairly quickly but leaving an inch or so that lasts for quite awhile. The nose is fruity and yeasty and definitely Belgian. The middle has tart lemon, sweet orange, and a bit of coriander. The orange strengthens in the finish along with a nice dry wheat flour and a bit of breadiness. A very pleasant and refreshing brew, and a relatively light 5.2% ABV makes this a perfect summer drink. I’m enjoying it quite a lot.

Unibroue Blanche de Chambly

Blanche de Chambly is a Belgian White Ale (wheat beer) from the Canadian masters of all beers Belgian at Unibroue. The head is massive and foamy, as is expected from a wheat beer. Check. The nose is yeasty and floral. Check. The middle is subdued by the wheat, with notes of orange and honey. Check. More citrus is the finish, which is mild, and not bitter at all. Check. Yup, this is a wheat beer, and a marvelous one at that. This is the beer that you can use to teach Blue Moon fans what a wheat beer should actually taste like. Another outstanding beer from Unibroue, and one of the best, if not the best wheat beer I’ve ever had.
